Not impressed... yet
If you're not at least paying 5 seconds lip service to Apple's latest announcements of iTunes 7, updated iPods and then upcoming iTV then it's probably time to hang up your journo dirty mac and go take that job in the local Starbucks (oh, I really wish I had a local one... why on earth doesn't Eastbourne have one, London has hundreds!).
But hang on there sparky, before the Apple-lovers (of whom I am one) get too hot under the collar and explode into sweaty delight, and before the Apple-detractors (of whom I can sometimes sympathise...) warm up their Windows branding irons, let's take a step back and look at the bigger picture for a second...
Or, in my case here, the smaller picture from the UK. You see, while some in the states have been able to view TV shows for yonks now and are now complaining that the new Movie content that is available through their iTunes service is not at DVD quality (let alone HD), please spare a thought for us lowly Europeans who don't even have TV shows yet!
I'm not saying that HD, and even HD, aren't important; to be honest, I think until the iTV box (whatever it looks like) includes a BluRay player of great quality, dual HDMI outputs, a DVD player and surround sound outputs, then it's not really a contender for a position of power in my living room. I'm one of those people who are just itching to get hold of HD, or to just get rid of the plethora of boxes that adorn my tv stand, and so a converged, easy to use (as only Apple can seem to muster) system would be great. But beyond all that, at the moment I feel (as do a lot of fellow brits) quite short changed when it comes to iTunes content.
Let's look at the list of shame:
- We don't have movies unless we create them ourselves... and last I checked, no one was queuing around the corner to see my latest epic
- We have Pixar Trailers... Whoopee! No, really.
- We have Music Videos. Well, a few anyway.
- And... that's about it as far as I can see.
- Oh, and video podcasts of which the Ricky Gervais cast is the best thing you can get on your iPod.
But, where's the BBC? Where are the news programmes? Heck, for the people that need a life, where are the soaps! (ok, sometimes I can even count myself in that group).
The point is that until Apple gets more video content on the iTunes service then it doesn't matter how many snazzy features the software has, it doesn't matter how great the iPod is at taking advantage of the service (c'mon you all screen iPod!), the fact is that without content for the UK then your iPod looks like an overly featured music player and iTunes just rubs some alcohol in the wound* by showing you what you 'could' do if you didn't live in a country other than the US.
So, in a nutshell what iTunes in the UK is screaming out for is great video content. So c'mon Apple, pull those strings and give us everything from The Office to the latest Eastenders video cast/episode. You do that, and things start to look a lot brighter.
* Ok, so the new "flip-through-albums" view is pretty cool, one feature I'll get a lot of pleasure out of... but what I want is great video content!
